I have a lot of thoughts also, b...Great topic here! I have a lot of thoughts also, but let's begin with this: Atheism is simply the lack of belief, and makes no other statement about a person or their position on any other issue. A lot of people have difficulty with the label when the "enlarging" has proceeded to a critical point due to the nature of how society reacts to it. After we find if we are convinced or not, any time we are not convinced that a god or gods exist, then that lack of belief in can be further sub-divided according to the nature of the specific case at hand. In many cases, we will be justified in calling out that a particular god can be demonstrated to NOT exist! And herein lies the point- most people who do not believe the claims made that Zeus is responsible for lightening are “strong atheists” regarding Zeus. This is because the claim that is made conflicts with reality AND as understood, the existence of Zeus is generally contingent his generation of lightening. Turning closer to your topic, modern gods have evolved as the needs and desires of modern societies, as those that did not (e.g., the Zeus example above) have fallen out of active worship (dare I say “gone extinct?”). For the Christian examples that you give, I think it is clear that you do not believe that a god exists which desires or commands punishments of homosexuals the way it is outlined in the Bible. Thus, I would argue you are also a “strong atheist” from a definitional perspective regarding the existence of this specific version of the Christian god. Unless, that is, you are actually convinced that such a god does indeed exist….. doesn’t sound like it to me!

Where agnosticism comes in is for knowledge claims; are you convinced that we can ever know that a god does or does not exist? If some cases, this may mean that you are an “agnostic atheist” (remember that an atheist is first and foremost simply not convinced of the existence of a particular god!). What has happened in many modern religions is that the nature of the claims they make have become less contingent on anything that can be tested in the real world. For example, if you have a claim of a pantheistic god that started the universe, but then no longer interacted with it in any detectable way, you have an un-falsifiable god claim. For such claims, the only reasonable position to take is one where you say “I am not convinced (after all, there is no evidence!) that we can determine if such an entity exists,” and this means you are an “agnostic atheist,” also sometimes called a “weak atheist.” It does not mean you can say such an entity does NOT exist, because there is no way to even evaluate the claim. And how much would we need to worry about such a deity anyway?

But perhaps I digress. What is more important than the labels we use is the reasons we have for becoming convinced of something. Being able to articulate those reasons and defend them for things that are important and meaningful is what makes life fun (at least to me!). And for me, this is why I gladly “lost my faith.” I no longer use faith as a justification for anything. This is because I could justify anything using “faith” and therefore it is not a reliable path to truth. Instead, I may develop “trust” in something based on preliminary data and information, but that is always subject to refinement and needs to be a tentative position. As new information comes in, we can update our models of reality to reflect this, but what has always bugged me about religious ideas is that they often CLAIM to have the answers, and the price we pay to access those answers is “faith.” Not worth the price of admission, since nothing can be demonstrated….. thus, I reject faith and rely on ways of knowing that have firm foundations. It's really funny to imagine him doing that! My brother-in-law would often come at George like a Wookie with arms raised, making Chewbacca sounds. Then he'd flail lightly at George, which always sent him into fits of laughter until he shook. So great. The Lord put us into each others lives at Luther Rice Seminary. It was raining the day Return Of The Jedi opened in Jacksonville Florida. George and I waited in the rain for a few hours as to assure ourselves the best seats. During the fight scene between the Emperor and Darth Vader i was overcome and started a dual with George we fought with our closed umbrellas as if they were lightsabers. We were seated near the front of the theater, maybe the second or third row. Needless to say, it didn't go over well. After the movie was over we just stayed in our seats. The usher just looked at us for a moment and realized it would be usless. We watched the movie again. George always considered me as his rebel friend, so true. Redemption was the topic of the day. So many wonderful conversations with George. I've missed him and tried to locate him many times. To find him here, has brought both tears that he is gone and refreshing memories of my youth and my friend. I will forever miss the way he introduced me to logic and the strategic way he asked a question. After one such session George said, "Congratulations Doug you've just rediscovered E=MC2. He was a wonerful friend, classmate, teacher and Christian man. Beautiful Eulogy Thank you Sir.
Sincerely Doug Haskins Corunna Michigan.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16474436469614281727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30422841.post-17346969396001750342015-09-14T09:21:29.151-06:002015-09-14T09:21:29.151-06:00Oh, Mike. Problems along the line Bonhoeffer pointed to at Riverside. Despite many good souls there is not enough soul. Services seem flat – the real time call and response essential to a vibrant service is missing. Photocopied “Read your lines” don't do it. It's a problem: How do you mesh the inspiring majesty of tradition and the immediacy of spirit here and now? I don't know, so I keep going.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30422841.post-12682933725918046472013-06-09T17:06:34.411-06:002013-06-09T17:06:34.411-06:00Try Christcity on 156st & St Albert trailTry Christcity on 156st & St Albert trailsteeleighhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11228779422261637318noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30422841.post-54619076682076628932013-05-13T12:38:46.649-06:002013-05-13T12:38:46.649-06:00Tim, I've accepted that I'd do better in a...Tim, I've accepted that I'd do better in an Anglican church! We tried this church out, wasn't really our thing from the getgo. Generic, predictable, knew it wouldn't work out. One of the more difficult things with dealing with "churches" is that sometimes they still do good. I have a friend who has been through a lot of tough times past few years, and the youth-oriented service at the church in question has really helped her through it. So I try not to shittalk them too much. But from re-reading the paoc statement of faith, style of music, kinds of sermons, I knew it was a pass for me. Then your story makes it more hilarious and painfully sad at the same time. I know those couple people don't represent the entire church, but you're right. It's not really a place to get along, it's a place where this specific kind of christian can get along.

Their youth services advertises itself as "messy." There's a backstory, some confidence that the DM has an ending in mind (or at least a direction to go in!), and then there's the ongoing task of responding creatively to the present situation. And although you can game in different ways, for me the greatest challenge is learning to inhabit the story at such a level that your actions flow out of your character and assumed identity, rather than mere pretense or impulse. So too with Christian ethics, as least as I'm learning to understand it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30422841.post-24130316052249562592012-10-08T14:16:55.896-06:002012-10-08T14:16:55.896-06:00Thank you for being a thinking person.Thank you for being a thinking person.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
