That being said, I do agree with the concept of reading the Bible on it's own terms rather than reading our presuppositions into it (although, this can be tricky if we are unaware of what our presuppositions are). Indeed, I have been recently questioning the way that the church often has one interpretation of the text, and anything that deviates in the slightest cannot possibly be true (and derivatives of this attitude, such as people with a different take on theology cannot be Christians. Maybe it is just me, but this seems to be an unwritten rule in the Church).

Already, I have found the idea presented in Chapter one of the difference between the gospel we present vs. the gospel Jesus presents quite interesting, and as I think about it, it makes a good deal of sense. Jesus preached the kingdom of God. Evangelicalism preaches salvation from Sin almost exclusively. Hmm... While I am not convinced that the latter is not part of the gospel (indeed, Paul talks about it), I find it interesting that the former is often completely overlooked, considering that it was what (as I recall, anyway) Jesus talked a significant amount about.Calvinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10971628936623296943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30422841.post-90270043844649421362010-06-09T12:28:06.328-06:002010-06-09T12:28:06.328-06:00Interesting. Just, seriously here, heard a sermon where a pastor talked of his evangelizing technique of walking up to strangers and asking if they're a good person... It broke my heart!! He really thought he was being effective! I still read the Bible and love Jesus and do go to church... but how much longer can we survive this crap they call the Church???? Thanks for your thoughts, I might go meditate on them! ;-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30422841.post-52276038973697387762010-06-08T11:07:15.605-06:002010-06-08T11:07:15.605-06:00I'll loan you my copy when I'm done...I'll loan you my copy when I'm done...Mike Perschonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09335943113292616702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30422841.post-72338039174872441262010-06-08T10:34:33.374-06:002010-06-08T10:34:33.374-06:00I might have to check this one out.
